Abstract
Drawing upon the old stories about king Lear, W. Shakespeare came up with two plays - The True Chronicle of the History of the Life and Death of King Lear (c. 1606-1608) and The Tragedy of King Lear (c. 1608-1623). Starting from 1980s, Shakespearean scholars have been reading these texts as separate works, which pursue different artistic purposes: the latter text is considered to be more theatrical. Our aim here is to trace changes in meaning and imagery of the play when it shifts from chronicle to tragic mode. The article is written to commemorate Shakespeare's 450th anniversary.
Keywords
Shakespeare, King Lear, the Quarto text, the Folio text, the king’s ‘two bodies’, the Fool, Edgar, growth of a monarch, ‘jester and king’ as an indivisible pair
