Abstract
The article takes a look at Turgenev's works of 1850s in the light of one of the favorite books of the writer - Goethe's “Faust”. This work largely determines Turgenev's reflection of a modern man and serves as the basis for his own artistic discoveries in his novel creativity. Type of a hero, the key issues, the main lines of the plot in Turgenev's prose go back to “Faust”, but are creatively reworked and reinterpreted. The influence of Goethe's book on mature Turgenev's prose is not accidental and not a temporary, but a strong and organic, due to the similarity of artistic and philosophical problems that the German and Russian writers set themselves.
