Abstract

The essence of the fundamental social change lies within a generation shifts in contemporary Russia. There are specific features and limitations of “Soviet ordinary man” concept. Original classification of generations based on historical conditions during the years of adulthood is provided. Special emphasis is made on distinguishing between “Soviet” and “Post-Soviet” generations. Data were collected from the annual Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE) in 1994–2016. Significant differences among generational cohorts are revealed with regard to the educational level, use of digital technologies, types of leisure activities, and commitment to healthy lifestyle. To sum it up, there should be an alternative concept to the one of “The Soviet ordinary man”.
