- Abstract
- Slavic tradition knows just a few examples of personification of trees. The present article examines the Czech and Moravian rituals of setting the maypole and the «chasing of a king» (honiti krdla, krdlova hra etc.) in the ethnolinguistic paradigm, as parts of a single complex, which translate the idea of the metempsychosis of the arboreal soul to the ritual personage (the «king»). The study is supplemented with comparative data on the Germanic and Finno-Ugric traditions.
