Abstract
The article focuses on the history and development of ethnographic education at Leningrad/St. Petersburg University. Drawing on available data, the author suggests that three periods marking distinctive stages of that development may be pinpointed. The first period, stretching from the 1880s through the beginning of the 20th century, marked the stage of institutionalization of the discipline; the second period, roughly overlapping with the first half of the 20th century, displayed specific needs of ethnographic training due to particular cultural and linguistic situation in various regions of the country; while the third, contemporary, period may be said to be aiming at the ethnographer as a universal specialist.
