Abstract
The article discusses the life and career of Nikolai Andreevich Yanchuk (1859-1921), ethnographer, philologist, folklore scholar, writer, social activist, who made a significant contribution to the professionalization of scholarship and museums in Russia. Yanchuk is also remembered as one of the founders and the first editor of the Ethnographic Review ("Etnograficheskoe obozrenie") journal.
