- Abstract
- The article examines the issue of caste exogamy, which remains understudied in the scholarship on Indian traditional society. The scholarly concept of varna/caste rests on the acceptance of endogamy as its main shaping criterion. Yet the Brahmanic social teachings do not put forward the varna/jati endogamy as an end in itself; on the contrary, they specifically stress the role of exogamy of kin groups within a jati. The author offers an interpretation of notions of "jati" and "exogamy" as key for understanding the mechanism of the caste organization formation.
