- Abstract
- The article reviews the issue of shamanic revival in contemporary Russia. The author discusses the transformations of both professional and everyday shamanism, and considers the specifi city of Siberian neo-shamanism, including new forms of neo-shamanic practices (such as religious organizations of shamans). She analyzes the reasons for their emergence and development, and also draws attention to the emerging phenomenon of deshamanization. Although political, economic, and cultural changes in Russia of the last two decades are considered as undoubtedly contributing to the revivalism trends, the author argues that the most important causes of appealing to ancient practices may be seen in psychophysiological particularities of those persons who are drawn to shamanic activities.
