Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of Vedic roots that form pairs like i (ay) 'to go' // yā 'to go' or t̥ (tari) 'to overcome' // trā 'to protect, to save' (called C- and ā-roots). The main attention is paid to the syntactic characteristics of these roots. It is proved that ā-verbs exhibit much less syntactic "flexibility", occurring either mainly in intransitive or mainly in transitive usages, and thus belong to the non-diffuse syntactic type. Corresponding C-verbs show more "flexibility" in terms of transitivity, cf. yā (intransitive) vs. i (ay) (attested in both intransient and transitional designs); trā (transient) vs. t̥ (intransitive and transient).
