- Abstract
- The article deals with Thomas Mann's investigation of F. Dostoyevsky's interpretation of the essence of German culture, historical logic of its development and Germany's role in European history, which were set out in “A Writer's Diary”. One of aew ideas that T. Mann quite accurately took in from Dostoevsky's works was a negative attitude to the state of the “German spirit” at the end of XIX century. Dostoevsky and T. Mann both believed that the victory of Germany in Franco- Prussian war was a defeat in fact because it was a victory of “civilization” over the “culture”.
