Abstract
Pilgrimage is considered as a very special kind of travel, that is a travel not only in a common geographical space, but in some special existential space, formed by sacral geographic images that enable a person to build long-term sound life strategies. So there are a special type of geographical images, that is existential geographic images, formed by a system of interconnected signs, symbols, archetypes, stereotypes, which define some or other territory in the perspective of the life sense and the life strategy. Author's statements are illustrated by the example of the epic "Moscow-Petushki" by V. Erofeev: the hero's trip by suburban electric train is considered to be a failed pilgrimage.
