Abstract
The paper refutes an often expressed view of G.F. Miller's scholarly contribution as primarily "empirical." During his 40-year creative career from the 1730s to the 1770s, the historian helped establish models for Russian academic literature and develop research programs and scholarly terminology in various fi elds. He founded historical studies in Russia on the basis of strict adherence to evidence, authenticity of historical reconstructions, criticism, and thoughtful interpretation of sources. Since his time, Russian scholarly writing has retained these standards for argumentation, justifi cation of the signifi cance of the problem under study, display of evidence, and proper identifi cation of sources.
