Abstract
History of Central Ciscaucasia at the time when this region represented a zone of strategic confl ict of interests between Russia, Turkey, and Persia. Although most of the materials came from the War Ministry, the number of maps and topographical surveys produced for administrative and economic purposes was also growing, due to the gradual integration of these territories into the Russian economic sphere. The author specifi cally analyzes road maps, including those published in guidebooks, which refl ected an early recognition of the recreational potential of the area, especially of the Caucasus Mineral Waters resort. Cartographic materials illustrate the process of Russian imperial expansion, the annexation of new territories, the development of new cities, villages, and roads, changes in the administration of territories, and the process of colonization by soldiers, Cossacks, and peasants.
