Abstract
The memory of the First world war was largely obscured by subsequent revolutionary events. At first, this war was perceived in broad sections of society as a domestic one. In the future, the Patriotic sentiments associated with it weakened, and the attitude of society changed. A negative role was played by the defeats of 1915, the fall of the authority of the Emperor and the Royal court, the deterioration of the supply of the army, large cities in Central Russia, and the strengthening of anarchy and the weakening of discipline in the units under the influence of the “defeatist” agitation of radical socialist parties. Out of the field of attention of researchers are the drastic changes in the peasant way of life caused by the war, which require understanding. The article presents and analyzes the material of a specific sociological study “War and the Kostroma village”, conducted in the winter of 1914-1915.
