- Abstract
- The article analyzes the level and dynamics of economic inactivity in Russia in the 2000s, describes the main socio-demographic characteristics of economic inactivity and the reasons for non-participation, and performs cross-country comparisons of indicators of Russia and the OECD countries. The empirical basis is the data from the population survey on employment issues. It is shown that the reserves for increasing the labor supply at the age of 25-49 years are almost exhausted in women and significantly limited in men. Reducing the economic inactivity of the population is possible mainly due to young people and older ages. This requires institutional and socio-economic changes (raising the retirement age, increasing the diversity of forms of employment, creating opportunities for combining study and work, improving health indicators, etc.).
