Abstract
The phenomenon of legal pluralism, or simultaneous existence of more than one legal order in the same social field, has always been characteristic for Latin America. But only in late 20th - early 21st century it was legally recognized by some states of the region. The need for comprehension of the phenomenon has caused scientific discussions about the approach to the concepts of democracy and rule of law.
