- Abstract
The article introduces new finds on the outskirts of ancient Smolensk. The town limits were refined and the town area at the beginning of the 13th century was determined (220 hectares). On the southeastern outskirts of Smolensk, a section of a sharp boundary of the area developed in the 12th–13th centuries and the adjacent field was identified. The authors prove the assumption about the maximum extension of the urban area to the south up to the modern Pobedy Square. At the same time, it is established that the territory of the Avraam Monastery was outside the area developed in the Rus period. The paper describes results of the excavation of a jewelry workshop dated by the second half of the 11th century in the eastern outskirts of Smolensk, where they made bronze amulets, jewelry and objects of Christian plastic art. On the western outskirts of the rightbank part of the town, on the bank of the river Gorodyanka (200 m from the 12th century church of Peter and Paul) traces of a glass making workshop of the 12th–13th centuries were found. Finds related to this workshop activity include pieces of raw glass, glass drops, fragments of plinths and pottery with glass sintering, as well as fragments of multi-colored window frames, which were supposedly made there.
