Abstract

This paper explores St. Gregory's teaching on matter and human body. The emphasis is laid on the influence of Platonic and Aristotelian traditions on St. Gregory's views as well as their reinterpretation in the context of biblical anthropocentrism and the doctrine of the Fall, according to which the world as a creation of the Good Creator "is good" and the misuse of free will of man is the major source of evil. The matter of the human body and material cosmos, originally conceived by God as an "icon of the icon", in the thought of the Saint, are intended for recreation to their glory and incorruption in the resurrection.
