Дети со сходным темпераментом/чертами личности или в сходных условиях могут развиваться по-разному из-за сложных взаимосвязей между индивидуальными особенностями ребенка и средой, в которой он воспитывается. Данное исследование посвящено изучению опосредующей роли черт личности Большой Пятерки при связи деструктивных методов воспитания и поведенческих проблем у детей, измеренных при помощи опросника “Сильные стороны и трудности”. Выборку составили данные 602 родительских отчетов детей в возрасте от 3 до 18 лет (M = 10.9, SD = 3.6). Исследование выявило черты личности, оказывающие опосредующий эффект на связь между поведенческими проблемами у детей и родительскими стратегиями воздействия в ответ на их плохое поведение. Такая родительская стратегия воспитания, как лишение преимуществ, предсказывала наличие проблем; однако, когда в соответствующие регрессионные модели добавлялись сознательность или уступчивость, ее вклад снижался до статистически незначимых величин. Кроме того, сознательность оказывала опосредующий эффект на связь между воспитанием с применением криков и ругани и поведенческими проблемами. Результаты свидетельствуют о том, что личность ребенка играет более выраженную роль в отношении поведенческих проблем по сравнению с условиями среды, в которой живет ребенок.
