Abstract

The paper investigates the topic of the Boxers Rebellion (1898–1901) in the Chinese literature, as in late Qing novels, as in contemporary literature. In particular, "The tanci of the national calamity of 1900" (1901) written by Li Baojia, “Sea of Woe” (1906) by Wu Woyao, “Divine fist” (1963) by Lao She and several novels by Feng Jicai are analyzed in order to trace different approaches to the Boxers, to the Imperial Court and to the foreign armies and international military intervention.

Feng Jicai`s first historical novels, in particular “Yihequan” (1977, co-written with Li Dingxing) and “The Miraculous Lamp” (1979) are focused on the Boxers rebellion in Tianjin, they represent the concept of public revenge as upholding of moral justice. His story “The Miraculous Braid” though describes magical beliefs as the core of the Boxers ideology. The last novel, “Monocular Telescope” (2018) also describes events in Tianjin that have been occurred during the Boxers rebellion, but it is very different from the previous two. It can be treated as an example of Sino-western cultural clash.
