Abstract

The article examines IMF loans granted to Argentina and Ecuador in 2018–2019 and provides a comparative analysis of the economic programs supported by the IMF now and at the turn of the 20th century. The author also compares the current economic situation in these countries with the situation that prevailed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The article assesses the effectiveness of the IMF-proposed reforms and speculates why the changes have not produced the desired results. The author analyzes a number of economic indicators, as well as recent statements by Argentine and Ecuadorian politicians, to understand how relations between the IMF and these countries will develop in the future.
