Abstract

A search for an origin of Neo-Vedantist approach to the history of Indian philosophy by its historians S. Radhakrishnan and S. Dasgupta turns to ideas of Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902). Based on analysis of the philosopher’s works, the author reconstructs his conceptual vision of Indian philosophy through the understanding of Vedanta as the essence, core and main principle of religion, philosophy and culture of India. Vivekananda have brought about a special ‘vedantization’ of Indian philosophy. He have interpreted Vedanta as identical with Hindu religion and philosophy and have created conceptual base for research in history of Indian philosophy: 1) historical-philosophical process examined through Vedanta as its essence and ideal model; 2) Indian philosophy understood as thought developing from first philosophical insights of Upaniṣads to Vedanta’s triumph in all-India scale; 3) explanation of majority of darśanas as having religious and spiritual character in opposition to materialism and skepticism.
