Textual canons of legal rules interpretation in the American law

The paper represents the role and significance of the main internal means of statutory interpretation of one of the most acknowledged theories of interpretation – the textual theory of interpretation of legal rules - in the USA law. Using a particular case as an example, the paper illustrates the application of various textual canons, such as “noscitur a sociis”, “ejusdem generis” and “inclusio unius est exclusio alterius”, and gives a short description of the judges’ stances towards each of the aforementioned canons.
